This is the first line of an old song and it came to mind as I saw the pictures of damage in the recent Christchurch earthquake.  My thoughts, prayers and concern go out to all those affected and we are thankful that there was only damage to property and no loss of life.

Isn’t it interesting that a natural disaster like this has the ability to bring people together and unite them in a second like nothing else can.

Immediately every political view is unimportant, selfishness vanishes and an entire community, even nation, can for a brief period actually work together and get an incredible amount of good done.

If only we could bottle it and make it available all the time :-) .

Why is it that adversity pulls us together and success pulls us apart.  Think about that for a minute.  It happens in every area of society.  As I travel in Asia for example the success of some creates more poor and the middle class is virtually non existent.

Successful people always have more detractors and those looking to pull them down for no other reason than they are successful.

This ability for success to divide is both powerful and inexplicable.

Maybe we should all start praying for more adversity if we want a more united society??
